Recent MRTA Retirement Accomplishments:

Teacher Retirees:

  • Thanks to MRTA all retired educators are now exempt from MO state income taxes up to $32,500 per year - same as Social Security Retirees HB 444 (2007).  Six year phase in, 2007: 20%; 2008: 35%; 2009: 50%; 2010: 65%; 2011: 80%; 2012: 100%
  • Annual Cola Increases Since 1975
  • 8.7% Annual Across-The-Board Increase for Retirees & Beneficiaries(1998)
  • A Monthly Increase Of $5 Times the Number of Creditable Years of Service (1999)
  • $5000 Death Benefit (1999)
  • 3.5% Across-The-Board Increase for Retirees and Beneficiaries (2000)
  • Lifetime COLA Increase to 80% (2000)
  • A Monthly Increase of $3 Times the Number of Creditable Years of Service (2000)
  • Working to Eliminate Social Security Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) (2002)
  • Work After Retirement (W.A.R.) Option (2003)
  • Partial Lump Sum Option (PLSO) (2003)

Non-Teacher Retirees:

  • 7.1% Increase Across-The-Board for Retirees (2001)
  • Lifetime Cola Increase to 80% (2001)
  • Work After Retirement (W.A.R.) Option (2003)
  • Partial Lump Sum Option (P.L.S.O.) (2003)
  • MRTA Advocated name change of NTRS to PEERS (Public Education Employees Retirement System) HB 443 (2005)
